|
Book by Antoinette Abbamonte
Stage Adaptation by
Garrett Zuercher |
Tree Wise, the exciting new children’s book, by Antoinette Abbamonte, a professional Deaf actress turned author, will be adapted by Garrett Zuercher, a professional Deaf playwright, and performed by the world-renowned Little Theatre of the Deaf. Witness our brand new, never seen before production of Tree Wise. Tree Wise tells the story of a boy who has Deaf parents and has made a friend with a girl at school. Through the help of a very special tree, the boy learns how to help his new friend and classmates understand more about Deaf culture. The tree teaches sign language to the children through games.
See, Hear, and Imagine, as the Little Theatre of the Deaf combines the spoken word with the visually dramatic American Sign Language –you’ll See and Hear every word of a language that is for the eye, ear and the heart. Performing in American Sign Language and the Spoken word, the Little Theatre of the Deaf creates a dramatic new art-form, watch as words leap from our hands into your hearts. For those who know sign language, it entertains and adds to the pride of knowing the beautiful language of sign. For those who don’t know sign language, it educates as well as entertains by providing an opportunity to learn some signs and have a greater understanding and appreciation of the third most used language in the United States. Learn about the culture and the people.
The Tony-Award winning company concludes the 50-minute program with the ever popular and energetic, Your Game which is acclaimed for its interaction with the audience.
Our Learn and Study Together Guide provides teachers with material about the performance, exercises and activities to do in the classroom pre and post performance, and even includes sign language lessons. Working hand in hand with curriculum, our Little Theatre of the Deaf performances and our Learn and Study Together Guide provide experiences and exercises to further the education of curriculum disciplines, social values of diversity, culture awareness, social studies, and more! Additionally, students will be exposed to a less-known culture from our own United States
By stressing artistic achievement, the LTD has demonstrated the power of art to bring about change.

The National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) is a touring theatre company of Deaf and hearing actors that performs in a beautiful and unique theatrical style that it created. That style, which has been referred to as “poetry for the eye and the ear”, links the visually expressive American Sign Language with the spoken word, allowing audiences to see and hear every word. Composed of 3 wings, NTD offers something for everyone. The Little Theatre of the Deaf (LTD) is NTD’s children’s theatre wing, Main Stage productions are intended for adult audiences, and the Actor’s Academy is a summer training program for aspiring Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and signing actors.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2007, NTD is the oldest, continuously performing professional touring theatre company in the country. During its history, NTD has completed over 100 national tours and 31 international tours; given over 10,000 performances; appeared in all 50 states and on all 7 continents; and appeared in numerous television productions. It has received critical acclaim for its adaptations of classical literature and original works, and it has collaborated with artists such as Marcel Marceau, Chita Rivera, Jason Robards, Peter Sellers, Meryl Streep, and Colleen Dewhurst.
Whether to a live audience in a theatre or to a television audience throughout the country, NTD performances do more than just entertain the audience. They entertain and educate. They offer mainstream hearing society glimpses of the beauty and power of Deaf culture that it may otherwise miss. NTD’s performances also challenge stereotypes on communication, language, and disability. In so doing, they promote diversity and inclusion within society as a whole.
