Theatre Immersion Program

Theatre Immersion Program

Two weeks of learning theatre arts by sharing, ideating, planning, and networking with playwrights and theatremakers.

About The Program

The National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) Theatre Immersion Program (TIP) is a two week program at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, CT that enhances the theater skills of Deaf and hard of hearing high school students with workshops, theatre classes, seminars, and rehearsals that culminate in a showcase performance. Expert Deaf theatre professionals will provide lessons on theater/acting lessons and script development. During the program, students participate in impromptu performances and create ASL stories.

The NTD Theater Immersion Program is hosted in collaboration with the American School for the Deaf (ASD) and is supported by the the Beatrice Fox Auerbach Fund at the Hartford Foundation and the State of Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development Office of the Arts.

The Deaf and hard of hearing high school students in the TIP program learned about the artistic development process from beginning to end and engaged in a hands-on process putting together their performance. These skills were developed through theatrical exercises designed to stimulate creativity, imagination, and theatrical inventiveness using NTD visual theatre techniques. Every participant in the program had several roles in the final performance.

Registration is free, lodging and food is provided by NTD. Participants are responsible for their own travel and ground transportation to the American School for the Deaf.

Space at TIP is limited to 40 participants, and invitees will be selected from among a pool of applicants of diverse strengths and backgrounds.
